This isn't a reinvention of DOOM as much as a restaging. In a way, this does for DOOM what MachineGames' Wolfenstein reboots have done for iD's earlier game, balancing nostalgia, retro flavours and an understanding of what made DOOM a timeless classic with modern technology and some new ideas. DOOM is back, and it's in better shape than it's been for twenty years. The original game was the shooter that everyone played shaped the future for games like Call of Duty and Battlefield and was essentially free for everyone thanks to shareware, which helped its rise to massive fame.īut responses to the DOOM reboot's open beta were relatively muted, while the decision not to send out advance review copies usually points to a turkey on the way. It's a long time since DOOM develop iD Software has developed a consistently brilliant single-player game, and there's been surprisingly little buzz or hype about this DOOM reboot. There definitely needs to be some optimization fixes or drivers put out there for this game, I have to turn some stuff off and down and the fans on my computer still sounded like a plane taking off.Admit it, you were worried. At the ends of matches you can get these basically meaningless timed buffs, like knowing the pick up respawn timers, tracking people who have power ups, and seeing who killed you last through wall, which are just another extension of the carrot/stick deal, they are in this in-between space of being completely pointless and being good enough to have a significant impact on any matches. In order to pick all of the weapons you need to go through the XP grind most FPS games do these days in an attempt at carrot-on-a-stick gameplay. You’re restricted to two guns because the multiplayer is based around loadouts, so you cant swap between more than the two you pick without dying to pick something else. Rather than go ALL OUT with the fast, you have less speed and less potential to do cool momentum based stuff. Getting to the raw gameplay first: It plays like a neutered Unreal Tournament. Sounds good so far right? Too bad that’s only the first part.

The sound design is great, when you blow someone into chunks (or get blown away yourself) it sounds appropriately wet, and the graphics look very nice, though there’s not all that much to see yet.

I find this new DOOM easy to get into, without doing the smart thing and looking at the controls I was able to just dive right in and start the night train. Couldn’t get a good screenshot of the carnage: combat is fast
